DIY Outdoor Picnic Table and Bench Set
A picnic table and bench set is a must-have for any outdoor gathering, whether it's a family BBQ, a weekend camping trip, or just a casual get-together with friends. With this step-by-step guide, you can build your own DIY outdoor picnic table and bench set and have a sturdy and stylish piece of furniture that will last for years to come.
Materials Needed
Before you get started, gather the following materials:
- Pressure-treated lumber (2x4s, 2x6s, and 2x8s)
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper
- Paint or stain (optional)
- Table saw
- Power drill
- Jigsaw
- Tape measure
Step 1: Cut the Lumber
Using a table saw, cut the lumber to the following lengths:
- 4 pieces of 2x4s cut to 30 inches in length for the legs of the picnic table
- 4 pieces of 2x6s cut to 72 inches in length for the top of the picnic table
- 2 pieces of 2x4s cut to 60 inches in length for the cross supports of the picnic table
- 4 pieces of 2x4s cut to 17 inches in length for the supports of the bench
- 2 pieces of 2x6s cut to 72 inches in length for the top of the bench
- 2 pieces of 2x4s cut to 68 inches in length for the legs of the bench
Step 2: Build the Picnic Table
Using the 30-inch 2x4s, build two identical frames for the picnic table legs. Attach the cross supports to the frames using wood screws and wood glue. Then, attach the 72-inch 2x6s to the frames using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure the boards are evenly spaced and flush with the edges of the frames.
Step 3: Build the Bench
Using the 68-inch 2x4s, build two identical frames for the bench legs. Attach the 17-inch 2x4s to the frames using wood screws and wood glue. Then, attach the 72-inch 2x6s to the frames using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure the boards are evenly spaced and flush with the edges of the frames.
Step 4: Attach the Bench to the Picnic Table
Place the bench frames on either side of the picnic table frame. Attach the bench frames to the picnic table frame using wood screws and wood glue. Make sure the bench frames are level with the picnic table frame and evenly spaced.
Step 5: Sand and Finish
Once the picnic table and bench set is fully assembled, sand all the surfaces to ensure they're smooth and free of splinters. You can then finish the set with paint or stain to protect it from the elements and give it a polished look.
